London Spitfire is this inaugural Overwatch League season's champions

London Spitfire has emerged victorious as champions of the Overwatch League’s inaugural season.

The team took on Philadelphia Fusion last Friday at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York, with over 18,000 fans showing up to watch the finals. Spitfire only required two sets to beat Fusion - winning both, a third set scheduled for the evening was called off.

Spitfire takes home a $1 million grand prize, alongside a pretty intimidating-looking silver trophy. While the team hit some rocky ground in later stages, Spitfire took a strong lead very early in the season.

“I didn’t think it would be this easy,” said Spitfire support Seung-Tae “Bdosin” Choi, through the team’s translator. “Next year I hope we play against a stronger team.”

The next season of OWL could prove to be even bigger, now that the format is a proven success. Blizzard plans to add six more teams to the lineup, expanding into regions outside North America.

Hopefully, that'll give Choi the challenge he’s looking for, as a more matured game brings a wider talent pool to the League. But I’m sure fans can agree that no team performed as badly as DJ Khaled’s inexplicably awkward pre-show set.

Activision-Blizzard is also looking at bringing the model to it’s expanded catalog of games. Starcraft Remastered is seeing a similar format, albeit with individuals rather than teams, and the publisher is looking to start selling team spaces for a Call of Duty league.
