Report: The Chinese Room has laid off small number of staff

Developer The Chinese Room has seemingly made a small number of its staff redundant.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that some employees have posted on LinkedIn saying that they are looking for work, while another roughly ten staff are down as looking for work.

Asked for comment, The Chinese Room neither confirmed whether layoffs had taken place or how many staff had been affected by them.

"The Chinese Room will share news on changes for the studio in the coming weeks," studio director Ed Daly said.

This news comes shortly after the release of the Siren's Rest DLC for horror title Still Wakes The Deep.

The Chinese Room was acquired by Sumo Digital back in 2018. The developer took over work on Paradox's Masquerade – Bloodlines 2's five years later in 2023.

There's been a fair bit of change at Sumo Group; in February 2025, the company refocused on its work-for-hire business, before its founders departed in May.

Sumo has also parted with several of its developers in recent years; Timbre Games was spun out from the firm in September 2024, while publisher Secret Mode was sold to Emona Capital in March of this year.

All of which is to say it's entirely possible that The Chinese Room might also have been sold off, though the studio is a jewel in its crown when it comes to work-for-hire.
