Sea of Thieves surpasses 40m players

Rare's pirate romp Sea of Thieves has been played by over 40 million people to date.

That's according to the developer, who posted on the game's website that it had hit this milestone across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam. There's no breakdown as to how many of these users bought Sea of Thieves and what portion played it via the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

"40 million players across Xbox, Windows 10 and Steam is an amazing milestone to be able to talk about, and of course it wouldn’t have happened without you – our brilliant, positive and welcoming community, who continue to surprise and impress us with your creativity and antics out on the waves," executive producer Joe Neate wrote.

"That said, I also want to take this opportunity to offer heartfelt thanks to the team, who’ve worked so hard to deliver over a hundred free updates since launch and have plenty more excitement and innovation on the horizon. Season 12 is almost here, and the new additions like throwing knives and the Bone Caller are going to transform our sandbox yet again."

Sea of Thieves launched in 2018. By October 2021, the game had over 25 million players. Sea of Thieves is also one of four Xbox first-party games that are making their way to PlayStation in the near future; the title is launching on PS5 on April 30th.
