Sea of Thieves has attracted 25m players

Rare and Microsoft's pirate romp Sea of Thieves has been played by over 25 million users to date.

In a post on Xbox Wire, the title's executive producer Joe Neate said that the game had reached this milestone just over three-and-a-half years after its 2018 release.

The developer said that this growth had been assisted by the introduction of Rare's new Seasons ways of releasing content, as well as Sea of Thieves' crossover event with Pirates of the Caribbean.

"To the 25 million pirates who have set out upon the Sea of Thieves so far, thank you," developer Rare said on Twitter.

"Here's to the Voyages we've shared, the foes we've overcome and the stories that await us as we sail into the future."

The title has attracted five million users over the last seven months. Sea of Thieves launched back in 2018 for Xbox One and Microsoft Store on PC, before coming to Steam in June 2020.

It's worth noting that due to the fact Sea of Thieves is part of Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, meaning that the 25 million players doesn't necessarily translate to 25 million people who have bought the title. Though we're not sure that really matters in the modern games industry.
