Global digital spending on video games dropped by four per cent year-on-year for the month of May.

That's according to research firm SuperData, which reports that consumers from around the world splashed $8.7bn on games for the month. The New York-based outfit claims that this is driven by a six per cent dip in the mobile games market.

Fortnite brought in $203m across all platforms in May, apparently increase on April's spending - for which we don't have figures - but a 38 per cent decline compared to the year before.

The company reckons that battle royale title Playerunknown's Battlegrounds sold 4.7m copies in 2019 by the end of May across both PC and console. Meanwhile, the latest entry in Creative Assembly's Total War franchise - Three Kingdoms - made over $62m in digital revenue during the month having smashed through the one million unit milestone.

SuperData also says that FIFA Ultimate Team revenue has dipped year-on-year to $93m on PC and console platform. This is in part due to the fact that the World Cup was last year, inflating spending on the platform.

Here are the Top Ten earners on PC for May 2019:

1. League of Legends, Riot Games
2. Dungeon Fighter Online, Neople
3. Fantasy Westward Journey Online II, NetEase
4. CrossFire, Smilegate
5. Fortnite, Epic Games
6. Total War: Three Kingdoms, Sega
7. World of Tanks, Wargaming
8. Tom Clancy's The Division 2, Ubisoft
9. Overwatch, Blizzard
10. Dota 2, Valve
