22-year BioWare veteran James Ohlen is heading up a new studio with Wizards of the Coast

Former BioWare developer James Ohlen is launching a new Texas studio to create IP for Magic: The Gathering creator Wizards of the Coast.

Ohlen’s 22-year career at BioWare saw him leave a mark on games like Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age: Origins, as well as Wizards IP including Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights.

The designer left the company last July to take a break from the industry, but it appears plans have changed in a little under a year.

“I didn’t think that I would be coming back to the game industry so soon but working with Wizards is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Ohlen. “Our mutual love of RPGs, world-building, and interactive storytelling is a perfect match.”

Ohlen will head up an as-yet-unnamed studio that Wizards of the Coast will open in Austin, Texas. The studio is working closely with the Dungeons and Dragons developer to create new IP, one that Wizards of the Coast states is outside of its existing brands.
