Indie smash hit Hollow Knight has seen a massive spike in concurrent players over on Steam.
According to data from SteamDB, the title has hit a record 40,558 simultaneous users at the time of writing. For context, one week ago, that figure stood at under 8,000 concurrent players. It's also double the 20,324 simultaneous users that Hollow Knight attracted back in May 2022, the last time there had been a new trailer for the eagerly-awaited Silksong.
Developer Team Cherry recently revealed that Hollow Knight had sold over 15 million copies to date; no doubt that figure has risen since the aforementioned new trailer.
This spike in interest comes in the wake of Team Cherry finally revealing a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong. What began as a second character for the game grew into an expansion and then into its very own game, which is finally launching on September 4th.
The studio also spoke to Bloomberg, putting to bed any fears that the game was stuck in development hell.
“We’ve been having fun,” Team Cherry co-founder Ari Gibson said. “This whole thing is just a vehicle for our creativity anyway. It’s nice to make fun things.”
He continued: “It was never stuck or anything. It was always progressing. It’s just the case that we’re a small team, and games take a lot of time. There wasn’t any big controversial moment behind it.”
