Hitman maker IO confirms it is working on fantasy title

Danish games firm IO Interactive has revealed that it is working on a brand new online fantasy RPG.

In a post on its website, the studio said that the title – imaginatively-named Project Fantasy – is an entirely brand new world and IP. This is inspired by books such as Fighting Fantasy and tabletop games.

"This idea – that a diverse group of individuals with different skills and strengths can work together and become more than the sum of their parts – is what inspires us," IO wrote.

"It inspires the fantasy world we are building – and it inspires how we build it. IOI now spans multiple distinct studios, from Copenhagen and Malmö in the north to warm Barcelona in the south. All studios take part in making all our games, including this new endeavour. People from all over the world with diverse personalities and skillsets are coming together to forge a new beginning."

This comes almost two years after reports that the Copenhagen-headquartered developer was working on a fantasy IP. At the time, it was rumoured that the project was to be published by Microsoft, but IO has not made any mention of who – if anyone – it has partnered with for the release.

IO spun out of publisher Square Enix back in 2017 and has since released two entries in its Hitman franchise. The company is also working on a James Bond game, codenamed Project 007
