State of Decay 2 has attracted 3m players in just over a month

State of Decay 2 has reached 3 million players over a month after launch.

Undead Labs’ hordes and hoarders sequel released last May, and quickly began hitting milestones. The first two days saw one million players sign up for survival, with the two million bar breached at the start of June.

The news comes on the back of the game’s chart-topping performance. US data trackers NPD also reported that State of Decay 2 was the top-selling game in the US in May across all platforms.

The accolades arrive alongside State of Decay 2’s first post-launch content drop. The Independence Pack ties in with the 4th of July holiday in typical fashion, adding an arsenal of freedom-themed fireworks and flags. Microsoft’s celebratory blog post also detailed more upcoming content, explaining September’s wave-based Daybreak pack.

While impressive, Microsoft’s ongoing trend of announcing player counts rather than sales figures continues to tell us very little. As we discovered with Sea of Thieves, the Xbox Game Pass and its free trial muddy the waters when it comes to working out actual sales.
