Swedish game makers generated €1.4bn in revenue in 2016

The Swedish games industry has seen considerable growth in the last six years.

Data released by the local games trade body, Dataspelsbranschen (Swedish Games Industry), reveals that in 2016, studios from the region generated €1.4bn in revenue. That’s an increase of 1000 per cent since 2010.

Furthermore, Dataspelsbranschen reveals that the majority of games companies in the region are profitable. 25 per cent of this revenue is being generated by small and medium-sized companies, potentially representing a burgeoning indie and mid-tier market in the country.

Games companies based in Sweden include EA DICE, Avalanche, Coffee Stain Studios and Ubisoft Massive.

"Sweden is blessed with great game developers, but we would hire more if we could. Now we're looking to attract new talent from overseas. Some companies have also opened offices in places like New York, Los Angeles, London and Berlin to tap into that talent pool," said Dataspelsbranschen spokesperson, Per Stromback.

"Sweden is constantly rated one of the best places to do business and live from top publications and developers are working even harder to make Sweden a particularly appealing place to work as they attract new games creators from across the globe."
