Tero Virtala steps down as Remedy CEO

Industry veteran Tero Virtala has stepped down as the CEO of Remedy Entertainment.

In a release to investors, the Finnish firm said that his departure is occurring with immediate effect. Markus Mäki is replacing Virtala in an interim capacity; he is one of Remedy's founders and has been a member of the company's board since 1995. He was previously chair of the board.

“I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016. I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future,” Mäki said.

Virtala was appointed CEO back in 2016. During his tenure, he has made Remedy more independent and less reliant on third parties to release games. This strategy saw the release of Control in 2019, a title intended to have triple-A quality with a substantially lower budget. The company has also acquired the publishing rights for Control and the Alan Wake series from Digital Bros and Microsoft respectively.

Despite this bold strategic vision, Remedy has not done so well in 2025; the company released live-service shooter FBC: Control – its first multiplayer game ever – in June, but this underperformed to the point that the developer had to issue a profit warning earlier in October
