Sony Santa Monica vet says triple-A publishers need to shift towards smaller projects

Former Sony Santa Monica co-studio head Meghan Morgan Juinio has said that the games industry needs to move towards smaller projects.

Speaking to PC Gamer, the industry veteran said that the trend of triple-A blockbusters with wildly inflated budgets is not sustainable, saying that there has to be a shift towards smaller games with smaller costs.

Juinio spent over ten years at Sony Santa Monica, ending her stint as co-studio head and director of product development, before leaving in June 2025. Prior to that, she worked in production roles at Nexon, Activision and Konami.

"I think it's already not really sustainable in terms of the cost of development," she said, discussing triple-A projects with massive budgets.

"There's been a ton of layoffs, and a lot of that is focused on the West Coast of the US, and it's clearly because the minimum costs are so high. Development costs will necessitate that the big publishers create [new] pathways.

"Does it mean a game like God of War is going away? I don't think so. But I think you'll start to see some avenues for the double-A or single-A from the larger publishers as well. Because it's not a sustainable model to continue like we are."
