The developer of Torchlight 3, Echtra Games, has been closed down by Zynga.
In a statement to IGN, the Take-Two-owned giant confirmed that it was shutting down the San Francisco-based studio as part of a "strategic realignment" of its resources.
Echtra was founded by former Runic Games co-founder Max Schaefer, the original developer of Torchlight and its 2012 sequel. He departed that company in 2016 to found Echtra Games, which was also owned by Perfect World, which released Torchlight 3 in 2020.
Zynga acquired Echtra Games in 2021 for an undisclosed sum; Perfect World owns Torchlight 3 to this day. At Zynga, Echtra worked on an unannounced cross-platform RPG and contributed to CSR Racing and the troubled Star Wars: Hunters.
"Zynga has made the difficult decision to cease operations at its Echtra studio, ending development on future titles and reducing roles," a rep said.
"This decision is part of a strategic realignment of the company's resources and priorities. We will work closely with impacted employees so they are treated with the utmost respect and consideration as we navigate this difficult process."
