Music, film and YouTube star Jack Black (pictured) has landed a role in the upcoming Borderlands movie.
As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, the Tenacious D musician and School of Rock star will be playing the character of Claptrap. That's the wise-cracking yellow robot that appears throughout Gearbox's looter-shooter IP.
Black joins Cate Blanchett in this adaptation of Borderlands, who is playing thief Lilith, while Kevin Hart is taking on the role of soldier Roland. Jamie Lee Curtis is portraying archaeologist Tannis.
Eli Roth is in the director's chair, while Emmy-winning writer Craig Mazin – the creator of HBO's Chernobyl – has penned its script.
“I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth," Roth said. "Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen."
This news comes in the wake of European publisher Embracer Group snapping up Gearbox in a deal worth $1.3 billion. Studio founder Randy Pitchford has described this acquisition as a "rocket booster" for the developer's ambitions.
The most recent entry in the Borderlands series – 2019's Borderlands 3 – apparently pushed the franchise over $1 billion in lifetime revenue.
