Steam Flash Sales died a death in 2016, but they could be returning in the near future.
That's according to a report from Valve News Network's Tyler McVicker, who took to Twitter (below) to say that he had heard Flash sales might be coming back citing info from the Steam Translation Server. That's a Valve-endorsed venture that uses volunteers to translate titles for other markets.
McVicker said that this time around, developers will be able to choose whether a sale lasts for six, eight, ten or 12 hours, something that is designed to make price activity "feel more like an event".
There's evidence to show that removing Flash Sales made events like the Summer Sale more profitable for developers. SteamSpy's Sergey Galyonkin wrote a piece saying before purchases spiked around the first and last days of a sale event where in the 2016 Summer Sale, consumers were splashing cash throughout.
That said, Valve must have some kind of data to show this new way - if it comes to pass - is a benefit or has had developers and publishers asking for something like this.
I've just been informed that @steam_games Flash Sales are returning, with a twist. Devs can chose for the sales to last 6, 8, 10 or 12 hours, shaking up sales almost every hour, and making sales feel more like an event again. pic.twitter.com/zbGtKYQBCt
