Steam switches on Nintendo Switch Pro Controller support

Steam now officially supports the NIntendo Switch Pro Controller. Valve has added the device to its roster of input devices via the latest Steam Client Beta'

Nintendo’s gamepad sports a similar layout to more traditional Windows/Xbox controllers. Until now, however, the device didn’t cleanly connect to PC. A series of complex workarounds were required to get the device working, with caveats including an inability to charge during play.

This client beta fully integrates the Switch Pro Controller into Steam’s ecosystem, allowing full button configuration and sharing control schemes on a per-game basis. The Switch Pro controller contains a few nifty features that should help it stand out from the pack. With HD rumble and a built-in gyroscope to play around with, Steam users should be finding novel new ways to play their PC staples.

The Nintendo Switch has become a haven for indie titles, and this update may help add parity to these games across platforms.

The Steam announcement reads: “We think it is a great device with a feature set that pairs nicely with your Steam catalog. The d-pad is ideal for fighting games and platformers and the gyro enhances aim in your action/FPS titles.”

Nintendo has historically kept its hardware closed off in its own self-contained systems. But a long-delayed step into mobile games paid off for the Japanese giant. It should be interesting to see if this integration turns out to be Nintendo’s first, small step into the PC business.

Switch Pro Controller support can be accessed through the Steam Client Beta right now. For now, there’s no word on when standard support will roll out.
