Communications & Community Lead

Community Lead - Editorial / Writing - Fully Remote, (Not Specified)

Job Title Communications & Community Lead
Job Description

Location: Fully remote/work anywhere
Reports to: General Manager
Travel: International travel will be required
Closing date: 30th September 2026

The Communications & Community Lead owns the plan, organises the people and helps deliver the work - with a modern, social-first approach.

The role

Steel Media is looking for a proactive, ideas-led Communications & Community Lead to rethink how we engage with the global games industry online.
LinkedIn will be central to the role. We believe there is a significant opportunity to use it not simply as another promotional channel, but as a place to build an active professional community around Pocket Gamer, Pocket Gamer Connects and the wider Steel Media business.

We are looking for someone who understands how organisations and individuals can build meaningful audiences on social platforms, particularly LinkedIn, and who can help us develop a more confident, distinctive and valuable presence there.

There are also multiple other communication channels to utilise, including email marketing, content platforms such as our existing editorial sites, live events and partnerships with other groups and media in the industry, and maintaining an overview of all these campaigns is a key part of the role.

This is not a role for someone who simply observes a content calendar and posts what they are given. We want somebody with drive and ideas: someone who can help shape our approach, identify new opportunities, try fresh ideas, lead activity across the company and manage delivery. We need a player-manager who is ready to direct the vibe of the business, our yearly strategy and our daily tactics to better work with the whole games trade.

In return, you’ll become a key part of an experienced, passionate team driving the games industry’s most vibrant and respected international events and media business, as well as further develop your own network.

What you’ll do

Lead and coordinate our external communications.

  • Lead regular promo meetings with the team, and maintain an effective campaign calendar;
  • Clarify responsibilities, follow up on actions, and keep campaigns moving;
  • Coordinate contributions from editorial, events, sales, design and other colleagues;
  • Create, commission or coordinate social, editorial, video and promotional content as needed;
  • Use performance data to understand what is working and continually improve our approach;
  • Delegate effectively and lead the other stakeholders: help create an organised marketing rhythm without becoming responsible for every routine administrative task.

Lead our LinkedIn and wider social strategy

  • Make LinkedIn (and other business-focused social channels) a central part of Steel Media’s communications and community strategy;
  • Develop ideas, formats and campaigns that grow our reach and encourage genuine engagement with games industry professionals;
  • Help establish a stronger, more consistent voice for Pocket Gamer, Pocket Gamer Connects and Steel Media online;
  • Identify opportunities for our team, speakers, partners and wider network to contribute to and amplify our activity. Encourage this activity at a company level.

Build community and create value

  • Find ways to engage our audience continually between conferences and other major moments;
  • Develop content and initiatives that are useful, interesting and shareable rather than purely promotional;
  • Explore new approaches to direct industry engagement, including discussions,
  • roundtables, masterclasses, introductions and other community-led formats;
  • Help turn our extensive events, editorial and industry relationships into an active year-round professional network.

Support partnerships and outreach

  • Help develop and maintain media, community and industry partnerships that extend our reach;
  • Identify organisations, communities and individuals we should be working with;
  • Support effective communication with partners and help ensure agreed promotional activity is delivered;
  • Work with media/event partners to ensure promotional opportunities are delivered.

What we are looking for

About you:

  • You are a proactive communications professional who is comfortable taking the lead and coordinating the work of others;
  • Full of ideas and comfortable taking the initiative rather than waiting for detailed briefs;
  • You are a social media native who understands the role of personality and online presence for the games industry;
  • A strong understanding of LinkedIn in particular, and how it can support B2B relationships and commercial objectives;
  • Experience in an editorial, marketing, PR, content-marketing, social-media or other audience-facing growth role;
  • Excellent written English and the ability to make complex propositions clear and engaging. You are a strong writer and communicator with good editorial judgement;
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of how marketing, PR, content and community management support sales;
  • Experience using analytics to evaluate and improve campaigns;
  • Experience in games, media, events or B2B communications would be useful, but strong relevant experience from another sector is equally welcome;
  • A love of the games industry and a gut understanding of its needs (or a willingness to learn and embrace all that) is essential.

What success looks like

Success will mean Steel Media becoming a more visible, active and valuable participant in the professional games community.

We want to see a substantially stronger LinkedIn presence, growing engagement with our audiences throughout the year, more effective campaigns and partnerships, and clear evidence that our communications activity is contributing to audience growth, event attendance, relationships and commercial opportunities.

Most importantly, we want someone who will help us develop a more modern, active approach to outreach. You will bring ideas, leadership and momentum rather than simply maintaining the activity we already have.
