Virtuos axes Calypte studio after one year

Virtuos axes Calypte studio after one year

Co-development giant Virtuos has shut the doors at Bay Area studio Calypte.

As reported by Game Developer, the company has closed down the outfit after just over one year, going by posts on LinkedIn from former members of staff.

Calypte was announced in September 2022. Virtuos confirmed the news, saying that this was due to the business – and presumably economic – situation.

"Navigating the dynamic business environment requires different approaches while making corresponding adjustments, and this difficult decision was made on the basis of the business performance of Calypte," a rep said.

They added that the company was working "closely" with staff impacted to "ensure a smooth and respectful transition". Virtuos says that has offered positions at its other studios to employees set to lose their jobs due to Calypte closing.

This news comes amid a wave of layoffs and studio closures across the entire games industry.
