GamesIndustry.biz reports that the company is now no longer owned by Sumo Digital in a deal that was facilitated by VC outfit Hiro Capital. It's not clear how much this cost or how much of The Chinese Room the venture capital firm now owns.
This follows news that The Chinese Room layoffs at The Chinese Room; it turns out that the studio did make redundancies as part of the MBO.
"Yes, following the divestment process a number of roles were made redundant," studio director Ed Daly said.
"The specifics are confidential but the studio is currently 55 developers. Clearly this was a very difficult process as we sought a future for the studio outside of Sumo."
Daly also said that the developer was going to be working on a variety of projects moving forward.
"We are continuing to work on original IP as well as with partner IP – just as we have been with Still Wakes the Deep developed alongside VtM - Bloodlines 2 with Paradox Interactive," he said.
At the moment, The Chinese Room is working on two intellectual properties.
The MBO has also brought some job changes; John McCormack has been promoted to studio creative director from art director, while Ross Manton has been promoted from senior executive producer for Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 to production director for the developer.
