Microsoft makes more job cuts in its games business

Tech giant Microsoft has made further job cuts within its games arm.

That's according to Business Insider, which reports that staff within the company's Xbox division are set to be impacted, along with workers in security, experiences and sales. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that these cuts were separate from the previously announced round of layoffs targeting staff that were underperforming. They added that only a small number of workers are going to affected by these layoffs.

This is the latest in a series of layoffs at Microsoft. At the start of 2024, the company laid off 1,900 members of staff shortly after closing its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Nine months later in September, the Big M cut a further 650 positions.

"Throughout our team’s history, we have had great moments, and we have had challenging ones," Microsoft games boss Phil Spencer said when revealing 650 workers were losing their jobs.

"Today is one of the challenging days. I know that going through more changes like this is hard, but even in the most trying times, this team has been able to come together and show one another care and kindness as we work to continue delivering for our players. We appreciate your support as we navigate these changes and we thank you for your compassion and respect for each other."
