Volition vets form new studio Shapeshifter Games

Former staff at Saints Row maker Volition have formed a brand new studio called Shapeshifter Games.

As spotted by TechRaptor, the firm has revealed itself on LinkedIn. It's a co-development outfit that aims to work on triple-A projects. Like its predecessor, Shapeshifter is based in Champaign, Illinois.

"It’s been five months since the closure of Volition, but I’m grateful to post that a group of us have re-formed as Shapeshifter Games," the outfit's studio director Rob Loftus wrote.

"The industry climate remains tough and I know I’m fortunate to reconnect with colleagues and turn the page on a new adventure. I’m hopeful for more groups like us and for the brighter days ahead."

Volition was closed in August 2023 after almost 30 years in the business. It's closure came due to parent company Embracer Group finding itself having to make deep cuts to make up for a $2 billion deal – reportedly with Saudi Arabia – which fell apart at the eleventh hour.

Embracer's expensive misstep has resulted in job cuts, studio closures and project cancellation.
