Square Enix intends to acquire and establish new studios

Japanese publisher Square Enix has said that acquiring and setting up new developers is part of its business strategy for the coming years.

That's according to the results briefing session for the year ending March 31st, 2022, in which it said that wanted to "boost game development capabilities" buy establishing new studiosor coming by them via M&A activity.

Square Enix also said it was looking to hire a new chief publishing officer to strengthen this side of its business.

This comes hot on the heels of the Japanese firm selling its Western developers to Embracer Group. The Swedish company snapped Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, alongside IP including Tomb Raider and Deus Ex, for a cool $300 million.

The proceeds of this transaction are seemingly being used to fuel Square Enix's ambitions on web3. It's possible that this is the sector it wants to establish studios for.
