Video games writer Scott Bennie has passed away aged 61.

In a post on his Facebook page – spotted by PC Gamer – it was revealed that the Interplay vet had died due to complications related to pneumonia. Bennie is best remembered for his work at Interplay during the 1990s where he worked as a designer, writer and producer on the likes of Fallout, Star Trek and The Lord of the Rings.

During his time on Fallout, Bennie is credited with giving the player's dog, Dogmeat, his name and apparently joked that it would be "the thing that lived on in his writing career".

Following news of his death, many from the industry have paid tribute to Bennie.

"I was saddened to hear that Scott Bennie died today," InXile's Brian Fargo wrote.

"He was a brilliant writer who worked with us at Interplay on some true classics like Star Trek: Judgment Rites and Starfleet Academy. RIP."

Interplay founder Rebecca Heineman added: "He was a great game designer and writer. I will miss him."
