Report: Half-Life: Alyx brought 1m new VR users to Steam

The launch of Half-Life: Alyx in March saw around one million new virtual reality users on Steam.

That's according to data from the Steam Hardware Survey, as reported by RoadtoVR, which claims that 1.91 per cent of the platform's users had a VR headset connected to their computer during the month of April.

RoadtoVR reckons that around 950,000 VR headsets were added during the month, bringing it up to a total of 2.7m users to date.

Half-Life: Alyx launched in March 2020 as a virtual reality exclusive, though developer Valve reckons that it'll be modded to not need VR tech at some point.

Research firm SuperData reckons that around 860,000 copies of the game were sold during March, with the title shooting to second place in the Steam Top Ten on the week of its release. The title dropped down the rankings pretty fast, likely indicating a huge number of pre-orders for Half-Life: Alyx.
