PEGI responds to concerns about NBA 2K20’s gambling features after trailer shows slot machines

Age-rating organisation PEGI has responded to concerns regarding depictions of gambling in the recent trailer for NBA 2K20.

The MyTeam trailer has attracted criticism with its depiction of slot machines and wheel of fortune.

The current rating is PEGI 3, meaning the game is targeted for young children as well as adults.

In an email on Reddit, verified by Eurogamer, PEGI revealed it's "aware that it may get too close for comfort for some people".

While there may be similarities between the NBA 2K20 content and real-life gambling, PEGI noted the in-game imagery "is not the same as teaching how to gamble for money in a casino".

However, PEGI is not able to change the game's rating based on a single trailer.

"The games industry is evolving constantly (and rapidly in recent years). As a rating organisation, we need to ensure that these developments are reflected in our classification criteria," read the email.

"We do not base our decisions on the content of a single trailer, but we will properly assess how the rating system (and the video games industry in general) should address these concerns."
