Panic's Untitled Goose Game and A Short Hike by Adam Robinson-Yu and Mark Sparling were the big winners at last night's GDC and Independent Games Festival Awards show.
The event was held over a live stream following the cancellation of GDC due to concerns surrounding the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
Untitled Goose Game picked up the GDC Game of the Year, while A Short Hike was awarded the IGFA's Seumas McNally Grand Prize respectively.
Furthermore, A Short Hike picked up the IGFA Audience Award – as voted for by the community.
The GDC Awards proved to be a successful event for Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games as Control won three accolades – Best Visual Art, Best Technology and Best Audio. However, two other titles picked up two awards each – Disco Elysium and Baba is You.
ZA/UM took home the Best Debut and Best Narrative Awards for its work on Disco Elysium. Meanwhile, Hempuli was awarded Best Design and the Innovation Award for Baba is You.
The GDC Audience Award – as chosen by the public – went to Thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light. The other awards, Best VR/AR Game and Best Mobile Game went to Vadar Immortal and What the Golf? respectively.
The rest of the IGFA winners were Bore Dome by Goblin Rage for Best Student Game, while Excellence in Audio went to Mutazione. Furthermore, Heaven's Vault picked up the Excellence in Narrative, Knight's and Bikes were awarded Excellence in Visual Art and Excellence in Design went to Patrick's Parabox. Finally, the Nuovo Award went to The Space Between by Christoph Frey.
At the GDC Awards, Global Jam executive Kate Edwards received the Ambassador Award – she was given the accolade as she has been a continued speaker and mentor within the industry.
The Awards were held online due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The GDC event itself was cancelled last month.
