SuperData: Consumers are on track to spend $1.5bn on streaming platforms by the end of 2018

Superdata Research claims that streaming platforms like Twitch will take in $1.5 billion by the end of this year.

The data comes as a result of research done on the payment habits of digital gamers worldwide. Superdata found that Paypal was the most popular payment provider, taking up 26 per cent of the market.

Paypal was also the most popular method for spending on a streaming market worth up to $1.5bn this year. This is made up of users donating to or subscribing to channels on services like Twitch.

Gamers cite speed and ease of for why they preferred a particular payment method, at 77 and 46 per cent respectively. Long payment processes caused 27 per cent of users to give up on a purchase.

Europeans are the most likely to avoid a payment entirely if not offered their preferred payment provider, while Latin Americans are more willing to look at alternatives.

Finally, only two per cent of users are using cryptocurrencies. Superdata claims there is “little mainstream interest in paying with Bitcoin.”
