Minecraft movie faces delays as director Rob McElhenney drops out

Warner Bros’ adaptation of Minecraft faces major delays after director Rob McElhenney left the project.

The studio has also picked up writer/director pair Aaron and Adam Nee to begin a total rework of the script. Wonder Woman writer Jason Fuchs penned the previous iteration alongside McElhenney.

The departing director told film outlet The Wrap that the project’s planned release date of May 24th 2019 is “not happening.”

Microsoft announced plans for a Minecraft tie-in movie two years ago. Back then, Mojang’s block-building behemoth was the undisputed king of games as far as younger audiences were concerned.

Minecraft is still, inarguably, a phenomenon. But with the recent, explosive rise of Fortnite, any delay may see the potential audience for a Minecraft movie continue to slip into Epic’s grasp.
