Sea of Thieves has two million players a week after launch

Sea of Thieves has two million players a week after launch

Update: That fastest-selling new IP stat does not include people who have played the game via Xbox Game Pass according to marketing chief Aaron Greenberg.

Original story: Rare's latest title Sea of Thieves has been in the wild for eight days now with the development icon announcing just how well the pirate-em-up has done for itself.

In a post on Xbox Wire, studio head Craig Duncan revealed that the game has two million players to date. The dev says that half of that figure was there on Day One, with the other million coming in over the first week.

Not only that; the game is the fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation, though we're not sure if that's a reflection on Sea of Thieves or the state of Microsoft's content roster.

Just how that two million figure has been worked out is a bit murky; Sea of Thieves launched alongside the Xbox Game Pass, which allows consumers to download any number of titles for just £7.99 per month... or try the service with the two-week free trial that is available.

The way the announcement is phrased suggests this is people who have played the game, both full price purchases and those who have dipped in with this all-you-can-eat offer.

Duncan goes on to say that 100,000 people have streamed the title since its launch, echoing the positive sentiment seen with streamers during the title's beta phase, with 10m hours of content watched since its release.

The studio head does admit that the launch has been bumpy, detailing some of the challenges the title has faced since launch, such a bug and scale issues, but says that these are going to be addressed. That has in fact already started, with a patch that launched today and... requires gamers to redownload the whole install.

"As the sun sets on week one, the team at Rare wanted to say thank you to all the players who have joined us adventuring in Sea of Thieves," Duncan wrote.

"Since launching on March 20, we have seen an incredible number of people from around the globe playing and enjoying the game, which has led to some humbling early momentum. We have watched amazing stories unfold with a number of players working towards becoming our first Pirate Legends.

"The worldwide excitement for Sea of Thieves has made it the fastest-selling first-party new IP of this generation. Having witnessed more than a million players on launch day, our community continues to grow and now has more than two million players. Alongside this, Sea of Thieves is already the best-selling Microsoft Studios first-party title on Windows 10."
