GameMaker is now free for non-commercial purposes

2D engine GameMaker is now free to use for developers creating non-commercial titles.

In a blog post, the head of GameMaker Russell Kay wrote that it was also simplifying when companies need to pay for its services by introducing a commercial license that is a one-time fee of $99.99. Previously there were a number of different tiers that developers would have to subscribe for depending on what their aims were.

GameMaker also says that it has seen a "three-fold" increase in the number of active users since it was acquired by Opera in 2021.

"The new pricing structure reflects GameMaker's commitment to making game development more accessible and flexible," Kay wrote.

"The free version serves as an entry point for beginners, a one-time commercial fee is for the curious ones, while the subscription-based enterprise tier provides a scalable option for more experienced developers and professionals."
