Hearthstone team votes to unionise

The development teams for Hearthstone and mobile title Warcraft Rumble have voted to unionise.

The news was revealed by the Communication Workers of America, which is representing the bargaining unit after a majority of staff in these teams have given the nod to unionise. Over 100 workers, including staff from software engineers, designers, artists and QA staff, are included in this group.

“My coworkers, as individuals, have voiced many concerns over the years, but it is easy for any company to ignore individuals,” game designer and member of the organising committee, Dominic Calkosz, said.

“We chose to organise in pursuit of a collective voice and a force of solidarity that the industry cannot ignore.”

Fellow organising committee member and senior 2D artist Uriah Voth added: "Whether we are fighting for layoff protections, security for our remote workers, or reduced wage gaps, the pressures we face are making it harder to create the high-quality work we care about. Organising gives us the opportunity to empower ourselves and challenge the instability and unfair conditions that undermine us."

There are now over 1,900 unionised staff at Blizzard following workers from the company's Platform and Tech, Story and Franchise Development, Diablo and Overwatch teams voting to form bargaining units.
