Sega and Netflix partner with Roblox's new licensing platform

UGC platform Roblox has set up a new licensing platform.

This venture allows for external intellectual properties to be used by creators on the service and expedites the usual complicated process for discussing licensing IP. So far, Sega, Netflix, Lionsgate and Japanese entertainment giant Kodansha are on board, with plans to bring in more.

Sega is allowing Roblox to make games using the Like a Dragon IP, while Squid Game and Stranger Things are available courtesy of Netflix. Meanwhile, users can create games based on the Twilight, Saw, Now You See Me and Divergent franchises. Kodansha, finally, is going to bring two of its manga properties to the platform soon.

The Roblox licensing platform is divided into two parts; Roblox License Manager and Licenses Catalog. The former allows companies to register that their IP can be used, as well as selecting the terms on which they can be used. This appears to vary wildly; Game Developer reports that Sega will only allow creators to use the Like a Dragon IP of their experiences already reach 1,000 daily active users. After that, developers will keep 50 per cent of revenue after Roblox has taken its share.

"We’ll be working closely with our other launch partners to bring more of their IP to Roblox, and onboarding more IP holders throughout the year," chief product officer Manuel Bronstein wrote.

"We’re aiming to open the License Manager to all IP holders in the coming months. While full-experience adaptations are the first form of agreement that we’re offering, we’re exploring additional license types and offering more ways to bring IP to Roblox for all types of creators.

"This journey with our creators and IP partners is just beginning, and we’re excited to see the collaborations and experiences that will emerge on Roblox."
