Tencent sells Splash Damage to private equity

Chinese tech and entertainment giant Tencent has sold UK developer Splash Damage to some unnamed private equity investors.

That's according to GamesIndustry.biz, which reports that the studio's leadership team would be remaining for the time being. Aside from that, the Splash Damage said that it wouldn't be providing any further comment. It's also unclear who actually owns the developer now; Companies House is yet to be updated. There's also no indication as to how much the studio was sold for.

Splash Damage was founded back in 2001 and has worked on everything from Wolfenstein to Batman: Arkham, as well as Gears of War.

The company was acquired by Hong Kong's Leyou Technology Holdings in 2016 following a majority investment. Tencent then ended up owning Splash Damage when the Chinese giant bought Leyou Technology Holdings in 2020 for $1.3 billion.

The studio acquired Battalion maker Bulkhead in 2022; the duo was working on the licensed Transformers: Reactivate, though this was cancelled in early 2025. That also coincided with the second of two rounds of layoffs in the last 24 months.

Tencent selling Splash Damage comes amid a shift in Chinese companies divesting from their overseas holdings.
