Data firm Newzoo has forecasted that PC games will generate $39.9 billion in revenue this year.
The company reports that this is a 2.5 per cent increase year-on-year driven by an increase in players in China and Japan. That's on top of what Newzoo describes as a "strong" release slate for the first half of the year – such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows – something that is continuing into the second half of 2025. Despite a strong performance, PC displayed the weakest growth compared to console and mobile, which rose 5.5 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively.
936 million people will be playing games on PC during the year, a 3.1 per cent increase year-on-year.
Overall, the games market is generate $188.8 billion in 2025, a 3.4 per cent increase on 2024, while 3.6 billion people will play games for the year. That's a 4.4 per cent rise year-on-year.
Shocking no one, mobile is the biggest segment of players, with a massive three billion. PC came in second, ahead of the 645 million console users.
"Together, PC and console will account for $85.8 billion (45 per cent of the total market), underlining the continued strength of premium platforms," principal market analyst Michiel Buijsman wrote.
"What we’re seeing here is a shift away from volume-driven growth toward value-driven strategies. console and PC revenues are increasingly anchored in blockbuster releases and pricing dynamics, while mobile is also increasingly top-heavy but sees growth in direct-to-consumer monetisation."
