Itch.io pulls NSFW games after payment processor pressure

Indie games platform Itch.io has removed all of adult NSFW titles from its platform after it faced pressure from payment providers.

In a blog post, founder Leaf Corcoran wrote that this was the result of a campaign from the anti-porn group Collective Shout, which has effectively declared war on both Steam and Itch.io. This has seen the group direct their "concerns" to the payment providers of both platforms.

In order to meet the requirements of their payment providers, Itch.io is conducting an audit of its content, after which it will be introducing new measures to ensure compliance.

"Our ability to process payments is critical for every creator on our platform," Corcoran wrote.

"To ensure that we can continue to operate and provide a marketplace for all developers, we must prioritize our relationship with our payment partners and take immediate steps towards compliance.

"This is a time critical moment for itch.io. The situation developed rapidly, and we had to act urgently to protect the platform’s core payment infrastructure. Unfortunately, this meant it was not realistic to provide creators with advance notice before making this change. We know this is not ideal, and we apologize for the abruptness of this change."

Valve recently introduced new, and rather vague, guidelines of what content would be allowed on Steam due to pressure via payment processors from the same group.
