Overwatch League rules Philadelphia Fusion jerseys out of bounds

The Overwatch League has ruled that jerseys worn by Contenders finalists Philadelphia Fusion are unsuitable for use.

Fusion intended to wear black jerseys with the initials FU this weekend, standing for Fusion University. FU is Fusion’s academy team to train up new players through the Overwatch Contenders league, but it’s likely Blizzard took it to mean something a little more crude. Instead, Fusion played both games this past weekend clad in plain black tees.

Representatives for Philadelphia Fusion told DotEsports that the team were not informed about the ruling on their shirts until Contenders media day in Poland. "The players frantically started messaging me at 3am ET," a PR Manager for the team said.

Fusion CFO Joe Marsh took to Twitter to note that while the FU-branded shirts could be seen as crass, they were no more so than other examples within both Overwatch and the League itself. Marsh compared the shirts to that of Houston Outlaws player Matt Iorio, with the number 69 printed nicely on the back of the jersey. Overwatch character McCree wears a belt buckle with the initials BAMF, which is inarguably a deliberate decision by Blizzard.

The Overwatch League has garnered a reputation for courting controversy on a regular basis. Last month's ban of Boston Uprising player Jonathan Sanchez for sexual misconduct, however, is a far more damning indictment of the league than a scuffle over shirts.

In spite of the controversy, Philadelphia Fusion went on to win 4-1 against Toronto in Poland this weekend.
