Epic takes down Fortnite for emergency maintenance

Epic Games has brought down Fortnite’s servers for “emergency maintenance” in a bid to resolve various login complaints across mobile, PC and console.

The popular battle royale title’s server troubles started late last night with players reporting as-1041 error messages which prevented them from logging in.

Fortnite’s official Twitter account acknowledged the issues while the games server status page revealed there was a “major outage”.

It said: “We're experiencing issues with our account services that may cause login issues."

Shaky foundations

Fortnite’s maintenance team soon found the issue was due to logins being blocked across all Epic endpoints, which included games, websites, and the Epic Games Launcher.

This was due to a database failure which the team deployed a fix for. However, as players started to return the initial fix was unable to handle the returning traffic. As such, the team reported more issues with login success.

Fortnite was then taken down for an unscheduled maintenance period to deploy “major upgrades” to the game’s database systems.

At the time of writing, the Fortnite team’s last message on Twitter read: “We're bringing the servers offline for emergency maintenance. We apologise for this inconvenience.”

“We currently have no ETA on when servers will be back up.”
