'You get what you pay for - no bullshit,' says CD Projekt RED on Cyberpunk 2077

Polish games giant CD Projekt RED has defended comments it made about its upcoming RPG title, Cyberpunk 2077.

In a recent interview, CEO Adam Kicinski said that the sci-fi game would have an online component, leading some consumers to worry that the game might feature microtransactions. This is with good reason given how prevalent they have become in modern games with projects like Star Wars Battlefront II coming under fire.

"Multiplayer is strategically important, playing online is strategically important, because we want to have a commercial leg for service type games, games which generate stable income, period to period, which are built," Kicinski said, as translated by TechRaptor.

"Of course, every game ends after a number of years, some service type games function even after 10 years, but outside our main source of income, meaning big names, it’s building a stable source of income. And in the future, we can imagine a lot of connections between big games and service type games – We have to acknowledge it, it is obvious.”

But in a tweet responding to a news article postulating on such fears, the studio said that this would not be the case and that Cyberpunk 2077 would be much the same as The Witcher III in how it deals with additional content.

"Worry not," the firm says.

"When thinking Cyberpunk 2077, think nothing less than The Witcher III — huge single player, open world, story-driven RPG. No hidden catch, you get what you pay for — no bullshit, just honest gaming like with Wild Hunt. We leave greed to others."

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in May 2012, with a teaser trailer released the following January. CD Projekt RED also had to put out a statement concerning reports of poor working conditions at the studio as it continues development on Cyberpunk 2077
