Epic's Fortnite latest project to get Playerunknown's Battlegrounds style battle royale mode

In a news story that sounds like it might have been thrown together by an algorithm, action survival game Fornite from Epic is getting a brand new Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds-style battle royale mode.

Announced via Epic Games’ official site, the developer warns that this is currently is in a beta phase meaning that it might be rather buggy.

Oh, and the team openly says they love games like Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds… which is actually pretty decent of them.

This project came about after the Unreal Tournament team started experimenting with the idea of a battle royale mode, while the Fortnite team focused on the core game.

The mode is launching on September 26th, and follows a battle royale mode coming to Grand Theft Auto Online.

Given that Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds has sold 10m units – with creative director Brendan Greene eying 100m sales – it’s easy to see why other companies are giving the battle royale genre a crack. We wouldn't be surprised to see more titles of this ilk popping up in the near future.

Fortnite is doing alright for itself too, having played by well over 1m people. We spoke to the team behind the fort-building title following its rather successful launch.
