DOTA 2 International kicks off, prize pool stands at $23.6m

Almost $24m is up for grabs at Valve’s DOTA 2 International eSports tournament in Seattle.

The main event kicks off today, with qualifying events taking place at the end of June, and ends on August 12th. This is the seventh time that The International 2017 has taken place and this time it has its largest prize pool yet.

At $23.6m, that’s an almost $3m increase on last year’s $20.8m. The winning team will walk away with 44 per cent of the prize pot, a whopping $10.4m, while second place will take $3.8m.

That prize pool can still grow, too. Viewers tuning in can purchase a Battle Pass, with proceeds being added to the pot.

All of this has come a long way since The International debuted at Gamescom 2011; back then the prize pool stood at a then record-breaking $1.6m.
