The Long Dark film announced as game sales hit 1.3m

Developer Hinterland Studios has announced that Early Access survival title The Long Dark has sold more than one million copies since its September 2014 release.

The game has almost doubled its sales since the last milestone announcement; back in April, Hinterland revealed that The Long Dark had been downloaded 750,000 times.

The title launches out of Early Access today.

But that’s not all – Resident Evil film series producer Jeremy Bolt has come on board to head up the development of a live action adaptation of The Long Dark. There's already a live-action trailer (below), starring Christopher Plummer and directed by Jared Pelletier

"My goal with Hinterland - starting with The Long Dark -- has always been to create original entertainment properties that could span multiple mediums, exploiting the storytelling potential of each form," said Hinterland founder and creative director Raphael van Lierop.

"Partnering with Jeremy on this project is the first step in achieving that vision of true cross-platform storytelling in the world of The Long Dark."

Bolt added: “I was immediately taken by the game's stunningly immersive landscapes, eerily solitary and realistic nature. It is an existential tale of moral, emotional and physical endurance with strong characters to build on; it is also a mystery. It is an honour to try to do justice to it on film."
